PUNE: Saturday was not a normal day at the Special Investigating Team office located on the State Reserve Police Force campus at Ramtekdi, Hadapsar.
It is not every day that an inspector-general of police (IGP) is arrested and, understandably, there was extra security on the premises. The gates were shut the moment a TNN team reached the SIT office, which is housed in an otherwise quiet and inconspicuous bungalow in a corner of the SRPF premises.
The TNN team, however, did get a glimpse of IGP Shridhar Vagal strolling in the lawns and returning to the office soon after seeing the reporters.
The SIT was established by the Maharashtra government on November 13, 2002, under deputy inspector-general (DIG) Subodh Jaiswal after the city police started levelling allegations against each other.
On September 5, 2003, the Bombay high court, acting on a public interest petition filed by anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare, appointed retired director-general of police S.S. Puri to supervise the SIT functioning.
While the Pune office constitutes the main investigating venue for the Telgi case, of late, investigations and interrogations are also being conducted in Mumbai, with a number of Mumbai police personnel now allegedly involved in the case.
